What is a .MPEG2 file?

A .mpeg2 file contains MPEG-2 encoded video, the same codec used on DVDs and broadcast TV. The extension is non-standard; the content is identical to a .mpg file. Open it with VLC media player (free, all platforms), or simply rename the file from .mpeg2 to .mpg and it plays in most other players without conversion.

Why can't some files be converted?
Files protected with DRM (for example purchased iTunes .m4p songs or some .wmv rentals) are encrypted. We can show what's inside, but nobody can convert them without the key.
