What is a .XVID file?

An XVID file is a video encoded with the Xvid codec (MPEG-4 Part 2), typically stored inside an AVI container. The .xvid extension is informal; the file is functionally an AVI. VLC media player opens it on Windows, macOS, and Linux without any extra codec installation. To convert, use HandBrake (free) to re-encode to MP4.

Why can't some files be converted?
Files protected with DRM (for example purchased iTunes .m4p songs or some .wmv rentals) are encrypted. We can show what's inside, but nobody can convert them without the key.
