What is a .DS_STORE file?
The most common data format on the web.
A .DS_Store file is a hidden file the macOS Finder creates automatically in every folder it opens to remember that folder's view settings: icon positions, window size, and sort order. There is nothing to open: it holds only internal Finder data, not documents. You usually notice it on a non-Mac, inside a ZIP from a Mac user or on a shared drive. Deleting it is safe; your files are unaffected and macOS simply recreates it with default settings.
